Sigma 60-600 mm f4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sport Review: an off-road zoom that takes us to the limit

Like the Sigma 40 mm 1: 1.4 DG HSM Art was presented in September in the latest issue of Photokina. From the beginning, it drew attention to its amazing 10-fold coverage. The same company does not hesitate to qualify the Sigma 60-600 mm DG4 HSM Sport as a hypertlezoom lens to understand what we will have in our hands when we use it.  We photographed with the distinctive Sigma 60-600 mm DG4 HSM Sport to analyze all its features.

This is a telephoto zoom lens with a slightly less than impressive focus range in this area. We are in front of a lens with which we can shoot at 60 mm and after a larger rotation of the wrist up to 600 mm range. And this with a full-format camera. If we have an APS-C camera, we would need to multiply by 1.5 or 1.6 and reach a cooling 960 mm with a light intensity of 4.5 to 6.3.

It’s a real monster that gets your attention wherever you take it. Even in my neighborhood, where they saw me during the tests, they realized that I’m a photographer because it’s impossible to hide. It weighs 2700 g, is almost 30 cm long and does not count as a parasol. It enters the Sigma sports range, which sets the lenses that the brand must have in nature and sports.

A considerable size

agile and sophisticated. It encompasses long-haul, zoomed or fixed lenses, especially optics dedicated to sports or moving scenes.

There are few objectives that can overshadow the market. We have the own Sigma 150-600mm f / 5-6.3 Sports or the AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f / 5.6E ED VR. The new Sigma 60-600 mm f4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sport has an image stabilizer and as we can see in the videos that circulate on the net it is protected against dust and humidity. Something basic and fundamental for its use.

Of course, we will all see their virtues and try to find one of their problems, if any. Surely many of you think that such a low luminosity with the longest focal length at the time can be a problem or a weight to transport, but there are still circumstances that need to be adjusted to shoot at similar focal lengths without being left on the road.

The lens is supplied with a corresponding padded case, a sounding parasol and a tripod or monopie collar that is extremely robust, but has a small disadvantage. It can not be removed for transfer. In a sense, it is logical, because both the size and the weight do not encourage it to make it pulsate, but to transport it from one place to another would be quite pleasant.

The quality of the frame

The initials, which always lead to confusion, mean:

  • DG : lenses designed for full-size SLR cameras and compatible with other smaller sensor sizes.
  • OS : internal stabilization system. In this objective they promise up to four steps.
  • HSM : movement of the motor rotation by ultrasonic waves that ensure a silent and high speed AF.

Design and construction

The Sigma 60-600 mm f4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sport is not suitable for everyday use. Almost three kilos are to blame. I was very tired on the trips I made with such a destination. Even with the comfortable Black Rapid straps, the weight is considerable in addition to that of the camera itself. And if we want to achieve all the performances, it is always interesting to go at least with a tripod or monopod.

All switches in sight

It is impossible to make it smaller and lighter. At least in the current times. Much of the design effort has gone to lighten the set to make it more manageable despite its dimensions. For example, the body of the lens is made of magnesium compounds and special plastics hardened with carbon fiber.

With the lens in the hands

The frame is metallic to ensure stability and durability. When we look at the interior, we can see the inner movement of the lenses to have such a focus area. The inner tube goes up to six inches in an opaque tube. And yet, the lens is well balanced and in no time you feel as if you are losing stability. The weight is very well compensated.

In the body it has several switches that help us to configure the objective that we describe:

  • Focus : with three positions. AF to activate autofocus; MF for manual focus and MO to be able to focus manually during autofocus.
  • The following one allows to limit the range of autofocus in three positions: the complete one, of 6 m to infinity and of the minimum distance to 6 meters.
  • OS : to choose the different stabilization modes or to cancel it.
  • Custom : to customize its operation as long as we have a USB dock .

Then we have the ribbed focus ring of almost 4 cm, which allows manual focusing. Of course, it has a massive 160-degree course that almost forces us to do it in two if we have to travel all the way. The lock switch seems to lock the zoom ring during transport. It is necessary to avoid wear, but it is still cumbersome to put it on and remove it.

And we reached the zoom ring, almost 7 cm wide. It has the same texture as the focus ring. And it has markers for some of the focal lengths that the lens has. And how else could it be that you have to make almost two full turns of the wrist to change from 60mm to 600mm … I imagine there is no choice. I think it’s good to do the whole game in all the pictures …

The lens changes noticeably in length as we change the focal length, but it does not change when we focus, which is much appreciated … We can not forget that it reaches 27 cm in transport position. Of course we have, as befits the Sport series, a sealed lens against dust and splashes.

Performance and image quality

How is it to photograph with such a lens? It’s a different experience for any photographer accustomed to working with lighter and edgier lenses. The viewing angle closes at 4 degrees. And it’s really hard to know where things are. You have to keep looking out of the corner of your eye until you get used to it. Then it’s fun to get tired, because you’re so heavy all day.

Iso 125 1/640 Sec f5,6

A lens with such an internal lens movement should not have very high quality on paper. At first glance, it does not surpass Canon’s heavyweight, which we tested a few months ago. It’s a different league and can not be compared. This lens of Sigma is aimed at amateur photographers or professionals who can start and afford no immense cost. And under this premise, the Sigma 60-600 mm DG4 HS Sport is outstanding.

Iso 400 1/320 f6,3

The big problem is the low brightness of the whole. It does not open more than f4.5 when we are at 60 mm, and hardly reaches f6.3 to 600 mm. This always requires excellent light if we want to achieve good shutter speeds to freeze the motion of the subject. It is true that with the current cameras we can increase the sensitivity to compensate for the low brightness. So it would be interesting to consider it a polyvalent lens if we increase at least to 800 ISO.

It’s also true that it’s stabilized (something that’s eye-catching and a lot) and that, thanks to the built-in ring, constantly reminds us that it’s a lens that should be mounted on a tripod … but in nature and in nature Sports are moving fast and we need high speeds like 1/1000 or faster.

The picture quality is not impressive. It is not a bright sharpness, as we are used to from the Art series. It improves significantly with good workmanship. If we look at the vignetting, it does not disappear until we get to f11 (f9, if we work with thirds of steps). Of course, as a good telephoto lens no distortion can be seen in the photos. And the bokeh could be described as pleasant.

The sharpness is maintained from center to corners but the diffraction makes an appearance in the more closed diaphragms, as is logical. They would need double the diameter to get a higher quality but it would be an unfeasible team and close to that madness that is the 200-500 f2,8 of the brand.

Sigma 60-600 mm f4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sport, our opinion

We are facing an ideal lens for all amateur photographers who want to experience working with long-distance focal lenses for various specialties, such as sports, nature photography, even for night shots where we want to see the huge moon between the towers from Madrid.

It is not a pointer lens. It is a versatile destination. Good pretty and cheap. That’s his trademark. A lens , not to go unnoticed and to practice several specialties with quality guarantees. It could even be a perfect option to take the first steps in sports photography. The autofocus is perfectly responsive to the old Canon EOS 5D Mark II and I think it will be faster and the prices with much more recent models.

It is not easy to transport. It’s heavy and cumbersome, but it allows you to take other impossible photos. And it’s only worth it. I enjoyed it as a child during the tests. I saw things I had not imagined, and photographs that I thought impossible. The image stabilizer has its function (many images are pulsing), but because of its weight and size, I strongly recommend using at least a monopod. Although the tripod is of course the best option.

We consider it a perfect lens, if you want to get into the world of extreme telephoto lenses. If you are aware of the limitations and know how to correct them (increase the ISO value to compensate for the brightness and work with a tripod), this is a perfect telephoto lens that you can carry in your backpacks. Of course, as with these giants, I recommend going to the gym first 🙂
