Fujifilm has made a name for itself in recent years as a company, which also takes care of older cameras and provides them via firmware updates regularly with new features. This is well received by customers and the press and ensures that Fujifilm enjoys a good reputation in the industry – even though that does not automatically mean that everyone is satisfied with Fujifilm cameras.
Nikon now seems to want to cut a slice at Fujifilm, as the company has announced a major firmware update for the full-frame DSLMs Nikon Z6 and Nikon Z7. When exactly this update should be rolled out is not yet known, but Nikon has already announced that the update will extend the cameras by three major functions.
1. Eye autofocus
First of all there would be the eye-autofocus (short: Eye-AF), which many Sony photographers have known and love lately. Overall, an Eye-AF is not something that really needs to be able to shoot good portraits. But the photographers, who got used to the uncomplicated way of working with the eye auto focus, often do not want to miss it anymore. So great that Nikon retro-equipped the Nikon Z6 and Nikon Z7 with an Eye-AF. Also a first short demo video delivers the manufacturer already:
2. RAW video
Furthermore, the Nikon Z6 and Nikon Z7 will soon be the first two hybrid or still cameras capable of outputting RAW video. Although this is only possible in combination with the Atomos Ninja V, it nevertheless shows that Nikon is now taking the video area very seriously. And the Nikon Z6, which DPReview voted the best video camera (compared to the Canon EOS R and the Sony A7 III), should make it even more interesting for videographers.
3. CF Express Cards
Last but not least, Nikon has announced that the Nikon Z6 and Nikon Z7 will support CF Express cards with the upcoming firmware update. These fit into an XQD slot and can convince with even higher speeds than XQD cards.
