Canon EOS RP, all information, contact and samples of the new mirror without full frame of reduced size (and price)
When we talk about the possibility of Canon launching a more advanced camera than the EOS R and being very professionally oriented, the company surprises us (even though it has already leaked out) with a model one level down the line. Therefore, the new Canon EOS RP is designed for what we normally call “enthusiastic users” and positions itself as the entry-level chamber for the full-mirrored segment, highlighted by two key elements: size and price.
About the same as he did with the launch of the Canon EOS 6D. However, in this new and thriving segment of mirrorless full-frame cameras, it only hit the market a few months ago with the all-new EOS R and now wants to open a spectrum of A wider audience.
Be that as it may, the firm presents the Canon EOS RP as ” small, light and very practical, designed for advanced amateurs who want to enter the revolutionary Canon EOS R System. Ideal for travel, landscape and portrait photography, as well as for video recording . ” Among its “powers” is also highlighted ” the world’s fastest autofocus ” and the fact that it is the ” smallest and lightest lightweight interchangeable lens digital camera to date “. Despite this size, and always according to Canon, “it offers the most advanced combination of functionality and ease of use, with an impressive image quality “.
To enter the world FF
“Affordable but advanced,” the new model is configured as the entrance to the full-size Canon system, but uses the power of a completely redesigned mount, as we tell you. We are talking about the HF mount, which features a 12-pin high-speed communication system, a short distance between the back of the lens and the sensor and a case diameter of 54 mm.
Its sensor is 26.2 megapixels (for the 30 Mp of the EOS R) and works with the most advanced Canon processor, the DIGIC 8, which “ensures an optimal balance of detail, depth of field control and incredible low-light performance . ” “The truth is that its sensitivity can reach 40,000 ISO and expand to 102,400 ISO.
Of course, the dual-pixel CMOS AF system is also able to offer a system that can focus in just 0.05 seconds, the world’s fastest in its segment, according to the brand. In addition, it is able to focus “in the darkest situations in complete safety”, thanks to its up to “4779 selectable AF positions over a large image area up to 88% x 100%”, which focuses under -5 Conditions allow EV, just one point less than -6EV of the EOS R (which is still a very interesting number).
The electronic viewfinder is the same size as its older sister, but the resolution is slightly lower (1,040,000 pixels). The screen, on the other hand, is a bit smaller (3 inches instead of 3.2 “), variable angle, and of course tactile, with four methods of” AF Touch and Drag. “Of course, it includes the Eye AF with continuous tracking to focus the eye of a subject when Face Recognition mode is activated.
Its body weighs only 485 grams (with card and battery) and consists of a magnesium alloy housing and a housing that is sealed against dust and moisture. It has the dual-sensing IS stabilization system and a silent ignition mode. The recording speed achieves five or four frames per second with Servo AF and offers unlimited buffers for JPEG and RAW (if a suitable card is used).
The design of the controls follows ” the familiar EOS-like operation […] simple and convenient to use, with the flexibility of the customizable controls, the scene modes and the graphic interface of the menu, ideal to adapt to the different levels of technical knowledge, whether it’s about taking photos or recording videos . “
In this field, the EOS RP offers ” freedom and many possibilities to videographers looking for a portable and easy-to-use camera “. Its maximum resolution is 4K at 25 fps , as well as Full HD at 60 fps and offers features such as 4K timelapse , timer, Servo AF for video and HDR videos. As with other models, the Dual Pixel CMOS AF enables ” precise focusing and face detection, while Stabilization of the Digital Image in Video (IS Digital Movie) provides a stabilization of the 5-axis video, to compensate the movement when it is recorded with the camera in the hands “.
Finally, it includes the DLO ( Digital Lens Optimiser ) correction technology for lenses that is applied directly to the camera with the RF lenses (and up to five EF), recording in RAW CR3 14-bit format , with the option of compact RAW (which saves over 40% of the size) and, of course, Bluetoothconnectivity and “smart” WiFi , both for shooting and sharing photos.
Six new RF optics
Along with the EOS RP, Canon has announced the development (which will not launch) of up to six new targets for the system, reaffirming its commitment to the newly launched EOS R system and the RF mount. These are the RF 85mm f / 1.2L USM and RF 85mm f / 1.2L USM DS , RF 24-70mm f / 2.8L IS USM , RF 15-35mm f / 2.8L IS USM , RF 70-200 mm f / 2.8L IS USM and RF 24-240 mm f / 4-6.3 IS USM .
The first and second, RF 85mm f / 1.2L USM and RF 85mm f / 1.2L USM DS are the same optics of medium bright telephoto type, ideal for portraits for their soft blur ” which provides a combination of first gently unfocused planes and a background bokeh, together with a very bright aperture, to make spectacular portraits “. The difference between one and the other is only in the coating used in the lenses.
For its part, the RF 24-70 mm f / 2.8L IS USM is a standard zoom ” high performance designed for professionals as well as for advanced amateurs ” and whose range of use will be very broad as you can imagine. Meanwhile, the RF 15-35 mm f / 2.8L IS USM is similar but in a more angular range and, therefore, more suitable for architectural photography, interiors and landscapes.
The fifth objective in development is the RF 70-200 mm f / 2.8L IS USM , a luminous telephoto for general use ” essential for professional photographers of weddings, sports or nature ” and whose size, according to the photos we have , promises to be very compact.
Finally, the RF 24-240 mm f / 4-6.3 IS USM is an all-terrain objective, for general use, ” the perfect travel companion, both for its size and its performance ” according to Canon. It is the only one of the lot that does not have the “L” that identifies the highest range in the “glassware” of Canon, and therefore is intended for a more general public.
By the way, the fact that almost everyone is part of the L family can be interpreted as “notice to navigators” that Canon is focused on developing a professional type system , so it is predictable (although at the moment there is nothing confirmed officially) that the more professional future EOS R will be a reality sooner rather than later.
Price and availability
The new Canon EOS RP will hit stores on February 27th . The starting price is 1,599 euros if only the body is purchased, although the package will include an adapter for EF and EFS lenses. If the camera pack is purchased (also with the adapter) plus the objective 24-105 RF 24-105 mm f / 4L IS USM the figure rises to 2,669 euros .
As for the new announced targets, since only its development has been announced, there is still no price nor launch date, although they must appear throughout the year (most likely in the second semester).
Contact with the EOS RP
As usual, Canon called us to see first hand the new camera but this time had the peculiarity that they already had a few units with which we could take photos to show you . Of course, because of the novelty of the matter we could not leave the building of Canon Spain in Madrid, although we could peek into its roof and also try a photographic studio they have. Of course, these are not final units, so the results must be taken with logical reservations.
Anyway it was enough to give us a first idea of the bet of Canon to want to open this area to the general public. And the first sensation was that, when Canon spoke of a compact and lightweight model, he did not say so. Actually the camera, when catching it for the first time, impresses by its lightness . So much that “it seems a lie that is a full frame “, was the most repeated comment among the journalists present at the event.
However, despite the reduction in size, the ergonomics are still excellentand offer a feeling of solidity. It is very comfortable to grip and transport thanks to its prominent grip, especially if we wear the RF 35mm f / 1.8 IS Macro STM optics which was one of the available and the smallest of the existing RF at the moment.
No doubt the size and weight of this lens are ideal for this camera, not like the RF 50 mm f / 1.2L USM, which is remarkably great for her. Obviously, both this objective and the RF 28-70 mm f / 2L USM are more designed for another type of more professional user because the size, as we can see, enters into other magnitudes.
Thus, undoubtedly, in addition to the 35 mm the two objectives that “will make better crumbs” with the EOS RP are the RF 24-105 mm f / 4L IS USM that will come in kit with the camera and the future RF 24-240 mm f / 4-6.3 IS USM that has been announced. Of course, users can use their Canon EF and EF-S lenses via an adapter, although it seems clear that Canon will have to develop more accessible (not so professional) lenses to make the user of this camera fall in love.
By the way, next to the camera, the EG-E1 extension grip (with the cover photo) is also going to be released , a small grip grip that simply adds a bit more camera body at the bottom. This facilitates grip especially by allowing the (usually battered) little finger to have its place, but by not having a battery or card, nor including additional buttons, does not seem very useful.
But returning to the camera, externally it is difficult to distinguish her from her older sister; In fact on its front does not appear the full name (only “EOS R”) so looking at it ahead could be confused if it were not because the bracket that houses the viewer is smaller and because the small auxiliary screen of the upper area has disappeared . Behind it follows the design lines of the EOS R and has very similar controls, although the touch bar has also disappeared , either because of differentiation between models or because of costs.
As we already have in the contact , the design of buttons and controls is quite personal and is a little away from the usual in the firm. Unfortunately there was not much time, but the first impression (taking into account also the absence of the touch bar ) is that it has few buttons . Of course, from the signature remind us of the options of personalization of your dials as well as the added by the configurable buttons of the RF lenses, another of the novelties of the EOS R, and of course the touch screen.
Leaning in the viewer, it is difficult to say if you notice the difference with your older sister, but of course the experience is not bad at all , with a very good size, brightness and resolution. Also the approach, which we found fast and accurate in the short time we could prove it. We will have to wait to do more extensive tests to see how the almost essential approach to the eye behaves and also how it is approach with minimum light (with which Canon impressed attendees at the last Photokina ), but the truth is that what we could see the thing looks very good.
