Canon EOS R: the Authentic Revolution of the Mirrorless

0 827

The Canon EOS R is considered a pioneer of the mirrorless Canon full-frame camera. His arrival, one of the most anticipated of the year, was equally a success and a disappointment. While it’s true that it’s a big change and that it’s the same as the famous Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, it’s not as perfect as expected.

But hey, that’s why we’re here. We’ll try to figure out the pros and cons of using one of the cameras that will be before and after the development of photography and the Canon brand. Let’s go there!

Canon EOS R Highlights

Canon EOS R: the Authentic Revolution of the Mirrorless

1. 30.3 Megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor

The Canon EOS R has a full-frame sensor that is very similar to the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV. Both models have a lot in common, the key difference is that the EOS R has an autofocus system that is one of its strengths. It has auto focus up to 5,655 points and dual-pixel CMOS AF technology.

This functionality guarantees a very fast autofocus speed when shooting and a very effective, consistent tracking approach when capturing video. On the other hand, the DIGIC 8 processor, which is also integrated, reads more detailed information to compare it in real time with a blurred image and to effectively compensate for the vibrations.

2. New RF Mount

In addition to the sensor, the new frame from Canon is another notable novelty that includes the Canon EOS R. The truth is that the original diameter of 54 mm will be retained on the EF mount, but the depth distance will be reduced from 44 to 20 mm. This peculiarity of the lens makes it versatile and offers more possibilities in terms of maximum openings or large angles.

In addition, this new version has 12 instead of 8 pins, which allows much faster data transfer between camera and lens. The ability to add a configurable ring on the target itself is also relevant. Instead of just two rings (focus and zoom), it also includes a third one (closer to the disk) that you can customize with the control you want, such as the right one. For example, the ISO sensitivity.

3. Multifunction Touch Bar

Another innovative feature, which includes the Canon EOS R, is a ribbon on the back, next to the viewfinder. It’s a touch-sensitive bar that’s very similar to the one already included in the MacBook Pro. Many people will (and many) miss the Joysitck button, which we know from other Canon models.

Being up-to-date can lead to controversy as a benefit, and although it has a lot of potential, much practice is required. It can be configured to be used as two buttons or as a slider to scroll through various options. To unlock it, you have to press it for a few seconds and it will be active, although we can disable it as well.

Interesting Accessories for the Canon EOS R

Canon EOS R: the Authentic Revolution of the Mirrorless

At the moment we have little accessories for this model. Gradually,  goals and gadgets are brought to the market to make the most of it. As with the expected adapter rings for lenses of other older frames.

We know what Canon Official has released is that every new RF lens has three basic features: compact size, improved optical performance, and improved optical specifications.

Currently, you can purchase the lens supplied with the case separately. The Canon EOS R is the RF 24-105 mm 1: 4 LIS USM. You can find it at Amazon for around 1,200 euros. There are also other lenses currently available only on the official website that look good, such as the Canon 50mm 1: 1.2L USM, the Canon 35mm 1: 1.8 Macro IS STM or the Canon 28-70 mm 1: 2 USM.

Use the LP-E6N for batteries. They are the same as other Canon high-end cameras. In general, it’s a model that has good autonomy but never as much as a DSLR.

If we also use the touch screen frequently without activating the ECO mode or the dual-pixel technology, battery will run out faster. Ideally you should get a second battery for rides and long sessions. At Amazon you will find the official battery for about 70 euros.

Other useful accessories for your new Canon EOS R can be an external flash (since there is no built-in flash) and a smaller backpack that is adapted to smaller camera dimensions and more compact lenses.
